Who We Are!

The Border Riders Motorcycle Club “BRMC” is a not-for-profit 501(c)(7) organization for gay men who like to ride motorcycles and who like to go camping on their motorcycles. Our membership spans the Pacific Northwest with the greatest participation in the Portland, Seattle and Vancouver B.C. areas. We are one of the largest and longest-running gay motorcycle clubs in North America. We welcome like-minded guests to our Meet & Greets, day rides, and to our monthly meetings and summer campouts with a sponsoring BRMC member.

September Campout Recap

The waning days of summer saw a strong dozen turn out for the last camp of the season, I was eager to make the weekend when I saw Ruckle Park on the schedule, since I had not been to Salt Spring Island before. It was also a chance to see some of the BC members who had not ventured south in a long time. I was happily not disappointed there. Some had come north early to spend time with friends on Vancouver Island.

Those arriving from Tsawwassen and those from Vancouver Island arrived at camp around the same time in late Friday afternoon. The camp is walk-in only but thankfully carts were available to haul gear. Also thankfully, our group camp was closest to the parking lot. Being up in the trees, we were farther from the morning fog on the water. The dappled sun was enchanting. The weather continued to be mild and pleasant the whole weekend. Waking to the birds in the morning, there seemed to be at least half a dozen different kinds. I found that quite enjoyable.

Small groups went to Fulford Harbour for Friday supper. Riding back after dark, the winding roads without lines and light made for ‘interesting’ riding. It was known ahead of time, that the island would not allow for a long Day-Ride. Some struck out to every far reach of road. Others stayed at the coffee shop enjoying the island. A few of us visited the Historic Farm at Ruckle Provincial Park. In all, a relaxing time. We gathered again in Fulford Harbour for Saturday supper with 14 members and guests. This time back to camp in the daylight, and the fire started by dusk. A short meeting, then much good socializing around the fire, including a visit from a former member. (who would have guessed the bicyclists in group camp two would be the louder group)

The Sunday ferries to the mainland left very early or late afternoon. Don and I made it to the ferry to Swartz Bay then transferred to the ferry to Tsawwassen, so I could make it to music rehearsal. The fog stayed in patches over the water until after leaving Swartz Bay. A stellar day to be on a ferry boat in the Gulf Islands. Others stayed an extra day with friends on Vancouver Island. In all a very relaxing and satisfying weekend.

October Meeting

October 16-18, Tampico, WA

The October meeting is a hybrid – normal meeting on Saturday evening after dinner, and an opportunity to spend all or part of the weekend like a typical camping weekend. Come anytime Friday or Saturday, depart after the meeting or stay through Sunday.

The Creek House is located about 30 minutes west of Yakima proper. While traveling in the area be alert for deer, elk, wild turkeys and other critters. The start of hunting season may also impact their locations and movement patterns.

There are a few beds available, and floor space to sleep between the house and garage – but will likely need some to plan on setting up tents.

Potential day activities include:

Ahtanum State Forest – begins about a mile west of the house, 75,000 acres of woods and dirt roads. Good for hiking, 4-wheel drive vehicles, dirt bikes and dual sports.

Wineries – there are lots of wineries in and around the Yakima to visit and some to eat at.

Here’s a motorcycle event - American Hill Climb National Championship near Sunnyside. It boasts: if you’re into horsepower, loud motors and motorcycles that probably shouldn’t exist… this one’s worth the ride. 200+ HP nitro-injected custom hill climb bikes. More information at: https://www.cyclefish.com/motorcycle_event/100400/american-hill-climb-national-championship

Schedule:

Friday afternoon there will be snacks available.

Friday dinner – anytime you arrive will include spaghetti bolognaise, vegetable, Italian salad, breadsticks, dessert.

Friday evening campfire.

Saturday morning – coffee and sweet munches when you wake up.

Saturday breakfast, 8:30 – Chicken fried steak, biscuits, gravy, hash browns, eggs.

Saturday during the day – expect people to be out and about for lunch, but those who stay can raid the freezer for midday food.

Saturday afternoon – pre dinner snacks/ hors d'oeuvres

Saturday dinner, 6:00 – roast beef, baked potatoes, vegetable, salad, dessert (which maybe after meeting.)

BRMC club meeting 7:00

Saturday evening activities – campfire and game night.

Sunday morning – coffee and sweet munchies when you wake up.

Sunday breakfast, 8:30 – Waffles, bacon, sausage, eggs.

I will be looking for people to help with meals and cleanup. Email Dennis with any questions at: president@borderriders.com

You can register here; registration closes at midnight Tuesday October 13th and we will see you there!

From the Handlebars of the President

I’m sorry to have missed the September Run to Salt Spring – it looked like a great weekend. It is the first event I have missed in a long time. I was somewhere off the coast on a cruise to LA on a mini vacation.

Our camping/riding season is over until next May’s Victoria Day Campout. We continue to have our monthly Meet and Greets and occasional weather dependent day rides until then for people to continue to get together and socialize.

We also have our monthly meetings with some of them being special events.

October – this will be the third year that we have the meeting at my Creek House (some call the club house) outside of Yakima. With October weather this is kind of a combination event of meeting and slumber party. Some on bikes, some in cars, and many make a Friday or Saturday to Sunday weekend out of it and avoid traveling back Saturday night. Depending on attendance we will likely need some tents based on floor space in the house and garage.

November – this is typically a Thanksgiving themed event in addition to the meeting.

December – holiday party with generally no business conducted.

January – Annual General Meeting

February – Annual Banquet, awards, new members, installation of new board, year in review.

Put these events on your calendar and plan to join us during the wet season and stay connected with our riding brothers.

Road Captain Rumblings

Well, Fall has definitely set in and our 2026 camping season has come to an end. And I'm looking forward to our winter meetings coming up.

Question: Still have that icky feeling in the pit of your stomach when going slow and turning around in the gas station parking lot? I'm not sure if I have ever mentioned this before 🤓, but taking riding skills classes with Team Oregon is tons of fun and helps us be much better riders and keeps us safer as well. Keep in mind that myself, Stan, C. and Jason S. all have 10% discounts for these classes. I will be taking several of these classes myself as I do every year. This is the right time of year to start planning which classes you're interested in for next season. Check out the offerings here:

See everyone at the creek house in a couple of weeks!

Contributions of Photos & Stories

Please feel encouraged to send us your photos of our activities to News@BorderRiders.com. Please be aware that often your email client or and/or our storage system might downgrade the file size/image quality.

Club Archives - We are working hard to consolidate the digital archives. We recently added over 4,000 new photos going back to 2004, but there are still lots of gaps.

We need your help!!! Please consider scrubbing your image archives and submitting them to the club in the original size. This will help us complete the picture. (You will be given instructions on how to upload them to our Google Drive.)

Create folders if needed and include the year and month first, then your name. Event name is helpful but not required. For example:

  • 2021 03 Seattle Day Run – Don Pics

  • 2025 01 Don Pics

  • 2025 02 Don Pics

Also, if you do anything interesting outside the club, we’d love to hear about it. Send us a short story with some photos and we will try get it into the next newsletter. It doesn’t have to be motorcycle related to be interesting. We are very diverse.

If you have photos and stories to share, please send to news@borderriders.com
