Who We Are!

The Border Riders Motorcycle Club “BRMC” is a not-for-profit 501(c)(7) organization for gay men who like to ride motorcycles and who like to go camping on their motorcycles. Our membership spans the Pacific Northwest with the greatest participation in the Portland, Seattle and Vancouver B.C. areas. We are one of the largest and longest-running gay motorcycle clubs in North America. We welcome like-minded guests to our Meet & Greets, day rides, and to our monthly meetings and summer campouts with a sponsoring BRMC member.

October Meeting Recap

This month we were treated to a great weekend at Dennis’ property located out in the middle of nowhere around 20 miles east of Yakima.  A stunning log cabin home nestled along a lovely creek and enough property to keep neighbors at bay, fall colors adorned the landscape with brilliant reds, oranges, and yellows.  12 members and 3 guests made the multi-hour journey from locations in Oregon and Washington, with 3 braving the weather by riding motorcycles.  While some brought campers along, others found places in the house to spend the nights as this club meeting was extended from Friday through Sunday.  While some rain found us late Saturday night,  by and large the days were clear and relatively warm with nightly chilling into the morning hours.  A fire pit really helped to set the “camping” mood as it provided a warm retreat into the night sky next to the babbling creek.

As usual, Dennis provided amazing and elaborate meals.  He has his process in the kitchen and in spite of multiple attempts to provide assistance in prep, cooking, and clean-up, Dennis goes at it alone for the most part spending probably 90% of his time there.  He’s in his element.

Most guys made it by Friday night that made for some great social time.  Saturday saw a few ride into town, but most stayed at the house hanging and chill’n throughout the day with some taking walks along the country road.  We later managed to regroup for the club meeting where business of the day was discussed and notably two new member nominations were made for Jason S and Jerry K..  After dinner, a couple of members had to make the journey back home, but for the rest of us, another lovely evening as the rain began to fall.

Sunday came too early in the morning, but was a bit warmer likely due to the night’s rain, which had cleared up by this time.  After another fine breakfast was provided, guys packed up, said their goodbyes, and headed back home.  For some of us headed back down to Oregon, we were (unsurprisingly) met with strong wind gusts as the approach to the Columbia River Gorge is known, which plays havoc with our vehicles and trailers.  Rain, of course, was soon to follow as we crossed the Cascades.

A big shout out to Dennis for hosting the meeting this year, as a visit to his place is always a special time to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big cities were many guests and members hail. The effort he puts into hosting is first level and is much appreciated by all.

A Most Noble Gathering of Riders in the Wilds of Yakima

Hearken, ye brethren of steel steeds and kindred spirits,

For this month’s convocation was most rare and fine.

Sir Dennis, lord of the distant woodlands, did open wide

His gates to us—a noble estate of logs and timber,

Set deep amidst the lonely hills some twenty miles east of Yakima’s fair bounds.

There ran a gentle brook, whose babbling did sweetly sing

’Neath autumn’s golden canopy—reds and ambers bright as flame.

No neighbor’s eye did trespass near, for his domain is vast and free.

Twelve members strong, with thrice that count of guests besides,

Made pilgrimage from Oregon’s vales and Washington’s rugged ways.

Three brave souls upon their iron mounts did challenge storm and chill—

Bold riders, undaunted by the heavens’ moody weeping.

Some did bring their rolling chambers—yea, campers stout—

Whilst others sought the hearth within Sir Dennis’ hall,

For our council stretched from Friday’s eve till Sunday’s morn.

Though the clouds did loose their burden come Saturday’s late hour,

The sun smiled kindly upon our days,

And warmth did linger long enough to cheer the heart.

A fire pit, that humble altar to camaraderie,

Did blaze against the night,

Whilst laughter and the creek’s soft murmur did entwine.

Now Sir Dennis—verily, the kitchen is his realm!

With apron girded, he did conjure feasts most wondrous.

Many offered aid, yet he, steadfast and sure,

Labored alone with cheerful spirit,

As though some culinary muse did whisper in his ear.

In sooth, ninety parts of a hundred he spent therein,

And every morsel bore the mark of his devotion.

By Friday’s fall of dusk the fellowship was full,

And joyful mirth did fill the hall.

Saturday saw a few ride forth to town,

Whilst others lingered long to rest, to jest,

Or wander down the country road in peace.

Ere the sun had fled, our solemn council was convened—

Matters of import discussed, and a new names spoken:

Jason S. and Jerry K. - nominated to join our noble order.

When night returned and supper’s cheer was done,

A handful took their leave for home,

Yet the rest did tarry by the fire’s glow

As raindrops played their gentle song upon the eaves.

Sunday’s dawn came swift and stole our dreams,

Yet bore with it the warmth of spent clouds.

Sir Dennis once more set table rich with fare,

And thus replenished, we did part with clasp and smile.

Those bound south toward Oregon’s lands

Met fierce the tempests of the Gorge—

Where the wind, like some unruly spirit,

Doth buffet horse and chariot both.

Rain pursued us o’er the Cascades,

Yet spirits held high, we pressed our course homeward.

Let all give thanks and hearty cheer to noble Dennis,

Whose hospitality doth outshine the stars.

His care and craft make paradise of wilderness,

And all who gather there depart the lighter of heart,

Refreshed from toil and city din alike.

Gear Store

The Gear Store was active over the VD weekend. We had a couple hundred dollars in sales which helps keep the inventory fresh. As always, if you have any questions about the Gear Store Inventory, feel free to contact President Dennis or VP Ron. They will be happy to answer your questions.

From the Handlebars of the President

Thanks to all that made the trek to the Palm Springs of Washington. In spite of being one of the few camping weekends this year that we were able to have an outdoor fire the liquid sunshine limited outdoor time in the evenings. At least no snow even though the snow level was about 100 feet above the house earlier in the week.

I expected that some people would venture out to explore wineries, breweries and farmers markets, but no one did. There were a couple of rides and walks in the area and that was about the extent of roaming. It was a weekend of a big part of what we are – a band of brothers, hanging out and socializing when we aren’t on bikes. Another thing we had for the weekend since there were also 6 dogs in attendance was described as “a bunch of men that turn into blabbering kids when dogs are around.”

What we have now until riding season comes around is more opportunities to share more social times with our fellow members and guests with a few motorcycles sprinkled in. I hope to see many of you at these upcoming events

Road Captain Rumblings

Hey everyone

What happened to summer? Is it really the end of October? We had some really cool camping trips and some great day rides this year I really enjoyed it a lot. Now comes the season of monthly meetings at members homes and parties and more fun stuff. Meet and greets will continue and day rides will still happen weather permitting.

Everyone keep in mind road conditions. This time of year can be slippery with water, frost, even ice and one of the worst offenders; mashed up leaf litter that can be very very slippery especially when you're carving out a corner.  At least most of the road snakes will be hibernating until it heats up again next summer!

I'm looking forward to a productive winter season of working on making the club an even better place.  This is a great time for us to think and talk to each other about what direction we want the club to go going forward.

Do you have any favorite camping places that you'd like to go to again?  Or, new places that you'd like to check out? Please let me know, its time to start thinking about next year's camping runs and where we're we'd like to go.

Stay safe and see you in Portland in a couple of weeks,

Dale C.
